The Ricercar [ree-cher-kahr] is a musical form concerned with the development of a theme through melodic imitation and polyphonic counterpoint. Used since the Renaissance by composers such as Bach, Dall'Aquila, and Frescobaldi, the ricercar utilizes fugal elements to explore simple musical fragments and expand them into variations.

In this cycle I have included three of my own ricercari, one each for organ, wind quintet, and harpsichord, as well as a short imitative prelude for string trio.
